8th Grade Math Curriculum
We will be focusing on improving mathematical thinking and problem solving skills using the Illustrative Mathematics Grade 8 Curriculum. Students will be asked to try different approaches to problem solving, evaluate the reasonableness of their answers, notice patterns and generalize, and explain their reasoning verbally and in writing. We will use a combination of independent and partner work, projects, assessments, and blended learning platforms to grow as mathematicians.
The Illustrative Math Curriculum, Online Lessons, and Student Workbook can be accessed online through the links on the Class Resources page.
We will cover the following topics throughout the rest of the year:
- Unit 1: Rigid Transformations and Congruence
- Unit 2: Dilations, Similarity and Introduction to Slope
- Unit 3: Linear Relationships
- Unit 4: Linear Equations and Linear Systems
- Unit 5: Functions and Volume
- Unit 6: Associations in Data
- Unit 7: Exponents and Scientific Notation
- Unit 8: Pythagorean Theorem and Irrational Number

Homework Expectations
Homework is intended to have students practice analyzing problems, not just getting a quick answer. Most assignments will be from the Illustrative Math workbook. Homework grades are based on student’s attempt on the problem. While homework will not account for more than 10% of a student’s final grade, the amount of effort that a student puts into their homework will be represented in their classwork and assessments.
If a student is missing homework, it can be found on Canvas. If a student is missing their Illustrative Math Workbook, they can access online from the Class Resources page.
Absent / Missed Work Policy
Absences happen. It’s just a part of life.
In accordance to School Policy, students will have three days or a number of days equal to the number of days of consecutive absences, whichever is greater, following the students return to class to make up the work and receive up to full credit.
If an absent student is able, they should attempt to keep pace with Lessons and Assignments which are posted on Canvas, and the Illustrative Mathematics Student Workbook and Online Curriculum are avaible on the Class Resources Page.
If a student is absent for a quiz or test, the student will have up to one week to make up the assessment.
If a student was present, but did not complete the work, late work is accepted up to one week after it’s assigned, but points will be taken off for being late.
